With all the colorful clothes available, why does everyone dress so drab?

I walk past beautifully colored shirts, ties, ladies dresses and skirts, tops, etc. in store displays and on store racks but it seems like everyone dresses in beige, white , tan, khaki, wheat, etc. When I was in Europe a couple years back, I noticed many men wore very pretty tie/shirt combinations (purple, pink, peach, periwinkle, etc) and the woman put alot into accessories whereas here in the US everyone seems to just throw anything on and go around colorless and drab. I find it depressing. Wouldn't the worry be a prettier place if people dressed better?

With all the colorful clothes available, why does everyone dress so drab?
I agree with you wholeheartedly!!!! I have no desire to be around someone who only dresses in black/white/tan/brown/etc. I think everyone should find a bright color that suits them best and wear it all the time!
Reply:There are colorful professional clothes that are sold at stores like Anne Taylor. Thus, I agree - why do so many people wear uncolorful clothes?! Report It

Reply:Because people are afraid to try new things in fear that they might look ridiculous.... so they just wear what they're used to. Besides not all colors go with everyone but people should still try new things!
Reply:The answer to your question dates all the way back to when the Puritans (and other similarly-minded groups) came to America to settle. Bright colors were considered sinful. Conservative colors (like navy blue, black, gray, etc.) were considered proper. What is today considered to be proper business attire is due to what our Puritan ancestors wore.
Reply:I didn't realize there any other color other than black.
Reply:I don't see what you do I live in Vegas and let me tell you there are some bright clothes and some that should never leave walmart I work in a doc office and all 8 of my doc's where fun color/tie combo's so do the men in my family I personally love colors and will only wear black or cream pants with bright fun colored shirts
Reply:Just because brightly colored clothing is readily available doesn't necessarily mean that it actually looks good on most people. Who wants to go around looking like a circus clown? In the professional world, it's advisable to stick with conservative colors. But if you want to make minimum wage and have a dead-end job, then feel free to wear that bright yellow shirt with your plaid pants, purple belt and wide orange necktie.
Reply:Being a larger size ( 15 + ) I noticed that alot of bright clothing is usually floral or stripes that go the wrong way.. or some gaudy yucky color.

I try to put more color into my wardrobe.. but floral prints are just not me so I tend to go for the more basic colors. Black, red, blue, ...

no white and no yellow.

I think that alot of ppl that wear the "drab" plain colors for more of a proffessional work place look. Maybe at night the "wild cat" comes out in them and they wear the colored stuff?
Reply:The manufacturers try to dump low cost mass scale machine produced goods in US market. Colourful and crafted products cost more.

One new on-line store has started offering very colourful handcrafted handbags at a very reasonable price

You generally see all expensive bags costing a fortune only in black, gray and other drab colours.

These bags are really beautiful.
